Oxford Schools Debating competition

The role of fake news in social media and the value of forming an EU army were just some of the topics our students were tasked with debating at the recent Irish round of the Oxford Schools Debating competition.

The Institute sent four students to the competition, which took place on the weekend of February 5th. Mark Smyth (6th), Alice Breen (6th), Molly Whelan (5th) and Thomas Moore (5th) took part in a range of mace debates against some of the finest debaters in the country.

Mace debates require the students to prepare their debates given only 15 minutes notice of the topic. The format emphases quick thinking and a broad range of knowledge, and the debates are a great experience for those interested in debating or improving their public speaking.
