Philosophy classes: exploring life’s big questions

The works of Nicolo Machiavelli, the infamous author of The Prince, have been the focus of 4th year philosophy classes this New Year. Machiavellian characters surface constantly throughout the English and History curriculums and this is an opportunity for students to get to grips with the source material.

In the 5th year philosophy classes lively discussions have been sparked by issues like “what constitutes a national identity” and how historical narratives can emerge. In the coming weeks students will explore the philosophy of language.

The 6th years have been learning about the Enlightenment and the key tenets of that intellectual movement. In the coming week’s discussion will progress to the ideas of Hegel, Marx and Nietzsche as students strive to understand these controversial thinkers from fresh perspectives.
