Oral Preparation: Leaving Certificate Oral Exams 2018

The Institute of Education oral preparation courses are offered for students studying Irish, French, German and Spanish.

These courses, taught by our experienced and skilled teachers, consist of 4 hours of expert tuition, covering all aspects of the oral examinations.

All courses include a one-to-one mock oral interview which is scheduled subsequently. This interview simulates the Leaving Certificate examination conditions, and is intended to build student confidence and conversational technique, ensuring a more relaxed and confident performance in the oral examination.

SUBJECTS

IRISH

All areas of the Scrúdú Béil covered with comprehensive “question and answer” on all the four sections:

(i) Fáiltiú
(ii) Aithris Filíochta
(iii) Sraith Pictiúr
(iv) Comhrá
(v) A mock interview with feedback for each student

FRENCH

An explanation of the marking scheme with advice on how to maximize the points given to the four main areas:

(i) pronunciation – 20%
(ii) vocabulary – 20%
(iii) structure – 30%
(iv) communication – 30%

Sample recorded interviews will be used – Emphasis will be given to pronunciation during the course. The student will take home a folder with the corresponding audio file to practice at home – Personal and abstract topics with the latest current affairs will be covered along with sample questions and answers as well as an extensive vocabulary content.

Hand outs and exam focused notes will also be accompanied by an audio file

Key grammatical elements will be covered with particular attention to tense changes, use of pronouns and verbs and their prepositions

Communication is the key to a good interview.

Students will be taught how to analyse a question, develop the topic to enhance their vocabulary and how to lead into a chosen theme.

The Document option will be prepared with tips and techniques on how to develop and increase interest in it

GERMAN

Learn from and practice with German teacher Orla Ní Shúillebháin.

A detailed explanation of the marking scheme will be given on how to maximize the best grade

All general questions will be covered in detail with emphasis on how to develop effective answers and expand your range of vocabulary and expression

Key grammatical elements will be covered with particular emphasis on tenses, word order and cases

All picture sequences, explain questions, future projection and related themes will be prepared with tips on how to develop your answer

All role-plays will be covered in detail with emphasis on communicative skills to achieve the top grade

Option to discuss a German film or novel

Project work with (individual attention) during and after course

Handouts with exam focused notes will be accompanied by an audio file

A mock interview with feedback for each student.

SPANISH

Discussion of the marking scheme, with particular focus on what is expected of the candidates and the importance of the role-plays.

Tips on how to maximize marks

Notes on general topics to be covered with extensive vocabulary

Particular attention to grammatical points required

Students will be taught how to expand on and develop topics, how to adapt answers to their own particular situation and how to best direct the conversation.

Recorded sample answers will be used and available in audio files

The use of technology in preparation for the exam will also be discussed

  • A handling fee of 1.85% of the course cost will be applied all payments made by Credit Card. Payments made by debit card will not be subject to this fee.
  • 10% reduction for the second and subsequent members of the same family, attending the same courses. Please contact our office to avail of this discount.
  • NO REFUND OF FEES

FAQ

Q: Can I be admitted to class without my card?
A: NO CARD, NO CLASS. It is every student’s personal responsibility to ensure they have their card with them each time they attend classes at the Institute. We have the right to refuse admission to any student who does not comply with this regulation. A day pass costs €10. A replacement card costs €20.

Q: Is there a place I can get lunch?
A: Yes, we have an onsite canteen serving a variety of sandwiches and drinks. Also, locally, there are sandwich bars and shops.

Q: My son/daughter is unwell and cannot attend.  Can I have a refund?
A: No, there are no refunds.  However, if you return the student’s admission card to us immediately, along with a short letter of explanation, at the discretion of management, a credit note can be put on the student’s file for future use or for use by a sibling.

Q: My son/daughter cannot attended the course.  Can we buy the notes?
A: No. Teaching is a central part of all our courses. The notes are to facilitate recall and revision of the day’s work covered by the teacher.
