English Paper 1 (O): Contained something enjoyable for everyone

Reaction to English Paper 1 (Ordinary Level) from Jim Lusby, English teacher at The Institute of Education.

An enjoyable examination paper for ordinary level students.

The reading texts offered a wide range of topics and perspectives, although with an amusing bias towards County Cork.

Each was engaging in itself. They included extracts from the speech given at the United Nations by sixteen-year-old disability campaigner Joanne O’Riordan from Millstreet, Co Cork; an interview with Olympic rower, Gary O’Donovan, from Skibereen, County Cork; and an interview with Nobel Peace Prize winner, Kailash Satyarthi, who is not from County Cork.

The questions set on each text were stimulating, without containing any unwelcome surprises, and the range of essays in the Composing section was generous.

A paper that contained something enjoyable for everyone.
