Irish Paper 1 (H): A broad and varied paper
Reaction to Leaving Cert 2019 Irish Paper 1 (Higher Level) by Clare Grealy, Irish teacher at The Institute of Education.
A broad and varied paper. There was something to suit every student. Specifics would need to have been watched in relation to the titles.
Section A- Essay:
There was a great variety of essay titles here:
• The housing crisis in Ireland.
• Women in sport today.
• Changes to improve life in Ireland.
• The pleasure and pressure a second level student has.
• The political relationship between the countries of the world is uneasy today.
The last essay title would have proved challenging, as, irrespective of a student’s level of Irish, it required them to have specific knowledge of world events.
Section B- Story:
Students would have understood the seanfhocal ’sense doesn’t come before age’. However, I wouldn’t be as confident of all students being able to understand the first story title, ‘fhoiseamh’, meaning relief.
Section C- Debate or Speech:
In the debate the topic that students could argue for or against was that ‘young people in Ireland give good care to their health’. Some students might have honed in on the word sláinte, thinking it was in relation to the health service.
The title for the speech was ‘the habit of reading today’.
