Irish Paper 1 (O): A very testing and challenging paper

Reaction to Leaving Cert 2018 Irish Paper 1 (Ordinary Level) by Clare Grealy, Irish teacher at The Institute of Education.

A very testing paper. A lot of students will have found today’s Ordinary Level Paper 1 very challenging. In recent years Section C has been a very popular choice for students, but I don’t think this will have been the case this year.

Section A- The Blog:
This had good choice and was nice and straight forward. The topics were:

1) The TV programme I like
2) Winter
3) I like Saturday

Section B- Story:
Again, there was good choice here.
1) Heading to a concert when I discover I’ve forgotten my ticket.
2) We won the match and there was a party on in the hall that evening, and there was a wonderful atmosphere… continue.

Section C- letter/ email:
In recent years Section C has been a very popular choice for students, but I don’t think this will have been the case this year.

The first question asked you to write to your friend telling them about your new mobile phone and telling them what you can do with your mobile. This would have required a lot of technical vocabulary. Students would have found this very testing.

Superfluous working in the second letter, about a summer job and the fact that you were ‘waiting for your brother and sister’, would have confused students a great deal.

Section D- Conversation:
The conversation topics were nice and straight forward.
