Irish Paper 1 (H): A very student friendly paper

Leaving Cert Irish

Reaction to Leaving Cert 2017 Irish Paper 1 (Higher Level) by Clare Grealy, Irish teacher at The Institute of Education.

This was a very student friendly irish paper, with a nice variety of interesting, accessible topics. These was something for everybody on this paper. Unlike previous years, there was no overlap between this paper and recent mock exam papers. Topical issues for 2017 appeared on the paper such as Brexit and homelessness in Ireland.

Section A- Essay:
There was a great range of topics here:
•    Second-level education in Ireland
•    Scandals in the sports world
•    Political leaders of today
•    Violence throughout the world
•    The society of Ireland in 2017 is a just and fair society

The topic of second-level education in Ireland would have given good scope to weaker students, as they would know a lot about this subject and they would have prepared material on it for their recent oral examination.

Section B- Story:
This is not a very popular section for students to answer, but the topic that came up was loneliness.

Section C- Debate or Speech:
Topics that the vast majority of students would have been banking on appeared in this section- the impact on Ireland of Brexit and the problem of housing and homelessness in Ireland.
